Join us for the inaugural intermediate-level swim camp hosted by BlueFin Swim Club, in partnership with Big Bay Events, in the protected waters of Langebaan Lagoon on South Africa’s scenic West Coast.
This two-day camp is designed specifically for swimmers looking to bridge the gap between “shorter” open water swims — like the Robben Island crossing — and longer marathon swims. Whether you’re dreaming of your first 14 km swim, a False Bay solo, or working toward a recognised challenge, this is the perfect camp for you.
Under the expert guidance of Big Bay Events’ coaching and safety teams, you’ll complete two days of structured open water training, covering essential skills for distance swimming, endurance building, and open water strategy.
What to Expect:
- Safe, fully supported swims in Langebaan Lagoon
- Intermediate-level sessions tailored for building distance and confidence
- Training on feeding, sighting, and pacing techniques
- Support and guidance from experienced marathon swimmers and coaches
- Practical tips for preparing for your first long-distance solo swim
Who is this trip for?
This trip is designed for the swimmer who is training for a challenging long distance open water swim. It is ideal for those planning to step up their swimming and undertake a 14km swim or solo crossing False Bay. The camp features long open water training swims and tidal swims with full safety cover, as well as technique coaching and training discussions, over the course of the camp.
Swimmers should have a good understanding of open water swimming, but swimming distances will vary for each swimmer based on their goals.
We have given this trip an ‘Ultra’ grading. These trips will push you to your physical and mental limits. Ideal for someone looking to take on a personal challenge.

Itinerary
DAY ONE
We meet at our accommodation late afternoon for a welcome meeting and safety briefing where we detail the plan for the days ahead. You are welcome to join the group for dinner at the house before heading off for an early night to prepare for tomorrow’s swims and the challenging days ahead.
DAY TWO
This is the most physically and mentally demanding day of the camp — designed to test your endurance and experience the reality of long-distance swimming.
We’ll start in the dark, launching before sunrise to maximise cooler water conditions and simulate early starts. The aim: to complete up to six hours of swimming.
Weather and tides permitting, we may attempt the Preekstoel to Mykonos route — a stunning one-way swim, or a full double for those ready to go the distance. As always, route selection will be based on local conditions on the day to ensure safety and swim quality.
Following this, we will chat with you individually, assessing the outcome of your swim and make suggestions if required.
Time will be set aside late afternoon for a group Q&A session, where we will cover nutrition, swim planning, training and recovery tips
DAY THREE
A day to swim, a day to focus on your technique, a day to relax. The day is planned with an easy swim to recover after the previous day’s efforts. If we were unable to offer the night swim on Day 2, this morning presents a second opportunity.
Trip information
LOCATION:
Just 90 minutes from Cape Town, Langebaan Lagoon offers dynamic, challenging conditions ideal for serious open water swimmers. With cool temperatures (14°C–18°C), possible strong winds and choppy water, and tidal shifts, it’s a perfect environment to build endurance, resilience, and marathon swimming readiness.
Set within the stunning West Coast National Park, this route-rich lagoon is a favourite for swim camps, distance training, and those looking to sharpen their skills in real-world conditions.
TRIP GRADING:
We have given this trip an ‘Ultra’ grading. This trip will push you to your physical and mental limits. Ideal for someone looking to take on a personal challenge.
SWIMMING CONDITIONS:
Swimming in the open water is a fantastic experience, however you should be aware that certain marine life could be present during the swims. In all cases we will work on reducing your contact with these creatures and that any interactions are managed safely.

As a consequence, our open water swim camp requires a certain degree of on-trip flexibility which can result in changes to the planned itinerary. These changes often add a touch of uniqueness to your trip and will be communicated to you as quickly as possible.
GROUP SIZE:
This camp has a maximum group size of 10 with a maximum.
ACCOMODATION:
Our accommodation is split between a communal house and three individual suites.
FOOD AND DRINK:
Saturday lunch and dinner (braai) is included in the camp price. Please cater for yourself for Friday night and your own breakfasts. Remember your swim drinks and any other nutrition you require!
